Find your child's skill level

An accurate level means the right frame weight, head size and string. Read the descriptions below, or take the quick self-assessment to get a suggested level.

Beginner

New to tennis or playing for fun
  • Has had little or no formal coaching
  • Struggles to rally more than a few shots in a row
  • Uses a full swing but contact is inconsistent
  • Mostly plays for fun, lessons, or modified formats (Red/Orange/Green ball)
  • Cannot yet serve overhand with consistency
  • Doesn't keep score in a full match yet
Gear direction: Larger head size, lighter frame, softer/comfortable strings at lower tension.

Intermediate

Consistent strokes, starting matches
  • Can rally 10+ balls consistently with a peer
  • Has a recognised forehand and backhand (topspin or flat)
  • Can serve overhand and land it most of the time
  • Plays club/social matches or local tournaments
  • Starting to place the ball with intent
  • Understands positioning in singles and doubles
Gear direction: Mid-weight frame (around 10 oz), 98–100 sq in head, multifilament or soft polyester.

Advanced

Competitive, fast swing speed
  • Plays competitive tournaments or school representative tennis
  • Generates heavy topspin and pace off both sides
  • Reliable second serve under pressure
  • Reads the opponent and constructs points tactically
  • Swings fast enough to control a stiff polyester string
  • Trains more than twice a week
Gear direction: Heavier players' frame (98 sq in), control polyester or hybrid at higher tension.
