When to Move Up a Racquet Size for Your Child

Kids outgrow racquets faster than parents expect. Learn the signs that it's time to size up — and why playing too long with a small frame holds back progress.

A junior racquet that fit perfectly six months ago can quietly become the thing holding your child back. Kids grow, their swing speed increases, and a frame that was forgiving starts feeling like a toy — shortening their reach and capping their power.

The clearest signs it's time to move up: your child is hitting the frame of the racquet rather than the strings, their shots lack depth even on clean contact, they're tucking the racquet close to avoid dragging it, or their coach mentions they've outgrown the stick. A jump in skill level — moving from beginner to intermediate rallies — almost always warrants a step up.

Rally length is a great practical signal. If your child is consistently keeping rallies going for 8-10+ shots at their current level, their mechanics are stable enough to handle a slightly longer, heavier frame. Track this every couple of months and you'll see the trend.

JuniorCourt Advisor's progress tracker logs these check-ins and automatically flags when a skill-level jump suggests it's time to upgrade. You get a nudge at exactly the right moment instead of guessing — or worse, realising months late.
